A LIFE DEDICATED TO THE LEATHER

The story of José Fuga began with his father, an Italian immigrant who provided a living for his family by working as an artisan in a saddlery. At his father’s side, José made leather goods for horseriding, shoes and eventually tanned sheepskins.

This was José Fuga’s formal education. Unable to attend a regular school because of the necessity to work, he became an alert observer of life.

With the practical knowledge obtained from life he started the tannery Curtume Marauense Ltda., in 1947.

Ever since then the tannery became the epicentre of his life, so much so, that he even built his house on the premises of the new company. He got married, raised nine children and followed, step by step the increasing success of the Fuga Couros companies.

At his companies he was not only affectionately referred to as “Bépi” by his co-workers but he was also widely admired for his open and sociable personality.

Today, José Fuga is an ever present example of his personal values, not only to his immediate descendants but also for his workers and associates who run the activities of the Fuga Couros group all over the world.
